Digital rewards can give telco customers a reason to stay

For telecommunications providers, customer loyalty is increasingly about more than points, discounts and occasional promotions. Digital rewards can become part of the core customer relationship, giving subscribers an ongoing reason to engage with their provider and, ultimately, helping to reduce churn.

One NZ's One Wallet is a good example of this approach. One Wallet gives customers a digital wallet in which they can accumulate One Wallet Dollars. Rather than traditional loyalty points, One Wallet Dollars represent recognisable value that customers can build over time and use towards an eligible new mobile phone.

Creating value customers want to keep

Churn is one of the biggest commercial challenges facing telecommunications providers. Customers can easily compare plans, switch providers and often see relatively little difference between competing mobile propositions.

Rewards provide an opportunity to change that relationship. Instead of relying solely on price or contractual commitments to retain a customer, a telco can progressively build value for that customer throughout the relationship.

With One Wallet, customers can receive One Wallet Dollars through eligible offers and activities and accumulate them in their wallet. That balance then has a clear purpose: helping to reduce the cost of their next eligible device.

The result is a simple loyalty cycle:

Engage → Earn → Build Value → Upgrade → Stay

The longer customers engage with the programme, the more value they can potentially accumulate.

Making rewards part of the telco relationship

The real opportunity is not the wallet itself. It is the ability to connect rewards with the behaviours that matter to a telecommunications provider.

Rewards can be used to encourage customers to engage digitally, add services, consolidate their relationships, respond to personalised offers or progress towards their next device upgrade.

This allows loyalty to become an active part of customer lifecycle management rather than a separate rewards programme sitting alongside it.

One NZ demonstrates this by integrating One Wallet into its broader customer proposition, with customers accessing the wallet and offers through the One NZ digital experience.

Turning rewards into a retention tool

A customer's next phone purchase is an important moment in the telco relationship. It is also a natural point at which they may consider changing providers.

A rewards wallet can influence that decision before it happens. When customers have accumulated meaningful value that can contribute towards their next device, remaining with their existing provider offers an additional benefit.

This is where rewards can contribute to churn reduction: the customer has something of value within the relationship that they want to continue building and, ultimately, use.

    The Youtap platform

Youtap provides the digital wallet and rewards technology supporting One NZ's One Wallet proposition.

The same approach can be applied by telecommunications providers looking to move beyond conventional points-based loyalty programmes and create rewards propositions that are integrated directly into their digital customer experience.

By combining a digital wallet, rewards, personalised offers and redemption in one platform, telcos can use loyalty to support acquisition, engagement, cross-sell, device upgrades and retention.

For operators competing in markets where network and pricing differences are becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to distinguish, this creates an important opportunity.

The future of telco loyalty is not simply about rewarding customers for staying. It is about creating value that gives them a reason to stay.
